Arbor Day
Held annually each spring, Arbor Day(Tree City USA) events promote tree conservation. Whether a large family event or corporate-sponsored day held on a Saturday, or a series of smaller gatherings throughout the year that include educational demonstrations, free tree giveaways, or a dedicated planting, Westlake Arbor Day/Tree City USA events help ensure our community members understand how important trees are to the Town of Westlake.
Below you will find photos and descriptions from a few of our notable Arbor Day events:
Arbor Day 2014
Westlake was granted the honor and privilege of receiving the Tree City USA title again in 2014- for the last 15 years. To help keep the designation, about 20 TD Auto Finance employees and their families partnered with Town officials and Metheny Landscaping for an Arbor Day event on Saturday to celebrate during Earth Week.Twenty-five trees were planted on the grounds of TD Auto Finance and 20 trees were given to volunteers at the event. Metheny Landscaping helped to take down a fence, remove brush, and plant the new trees, which were donated by the Town. Afterward, participants were fed a hot dog lunch and the little ones were treated to fire truck tours, courtesy of Westlake Fire Department. In addition to the tree planting event, Arbor Day activities were also held at Westlake Academy. A Fort Worth regional forester made a special visit to the school and spoke to students about the importance of planting trees, and the proper way to plant and care for newly planted trees. Students also received educational pamphlets and an Arbor day bracelet.
Arbor Day 2013
A wonderful time was had by all at the 2013 Arbor Day event as we welcomed over 300 visitors that came out to celebrate the Town’s Tree City USA Award presentation. The award was presented to Mayor Wheat by Courtney Blevins with the Forest Service Fort Worth. In addition, we were honored to have State Representative Giovanni Capriglione introduce himself and present an Arbor Day proclamation to Mayor Wheat.
Many activities were held for the entire family such as music performed by the Payin' My Dues Band sponsored in partnership with WPAS, Arts Council NE and the Town of Westlake. Participants enjoyed face painting, a butterfly exhibit/release, WPAS’s art contest display, kid’s crafts, a balloon twister and juggler, game truck, Meat U Anywhere BBQ, Cassie's Frozen Yogurt, and many other fun things to do. We rose over $10,000 through corporate sponsorships, gifts, in-kind donations, raffle ticket sales, beverage sales and exhibit booth fees to help fund the event. Many, many thanks to our community contributors for helping us make this year’s event such a big success!

Westlake is Proud to be a Tree City USA Award Recipient!
The Arbor Day Foundation awarded Westlake the honor of being named a Tree City USA community for 2013, the Town's 14th consecutive year to be granted this prestigious award. "Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers, and committed citizens in communities like Westlake make smart investments in urban forests," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive officer of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits."
"We make an immense mistake when we think of trees solely an aesthetic member of a community. They cut pollution, they cool the air, they prevent erosion, they muffle sound, they produce oxygen. Then after all that, they look good." - Dr. Richard Leake
