The trees, hillsides, country roads and good neighbors are what brought all of us to Westlake. We chose to live here and have worked side by side to stay united. We are proud to be Westlake citizens. We, like the trees in Westlake, are a symbol of strength, standing tall, and we also, like the trees, are not living secluded lives from our surroundings. Westlake is growing. Preserving, yet sharing the country feeling that we have come to enjoy and expect is a priority. One way that we can share and preserve our love for Westlake and its trees is to have each family embroider a leaf pattern on a piece of fabric, piecing it together making the Heritage Quilt. Participation in this project will produce a long-lasting reminder of the sense of community that we have come to enjoy.
The Westlake Tree City USA Advisory Committee began the Heritage Quilt project because we know that Westlake's citizens value our rural environment with trees along the roadsides, in public areas, and around our homes and businesses. Tree City USA's need to protect and promote trees, provide educational services to the public, and work toward community involvement, motivates us to reach out and touch your intellect as well as your heart and hands, creating a long lasting community heritage.
Each family embroidered their name and a representation of a native tree leaf onto a square. The family squares were combined making a queen size quilt.
In addition, each of the Tree City USA members, Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Aldermen, Mayor, town employees and consultants made a square for another quilt to remain with the town in recognition of Westlake's first Arbor Day celebration.
