Decoration Day
About Decoration Day
Have you ever been to a Decoration Day?  This annual event is a community tradition of recognizing the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our great nation. As a salute to those fallen soldiers, the Westlake Historical Preservation Society sponsors its annual Decoration Day event each Memorial Day at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, located at 3101 J.T. Ottinger Road in Westlake. It is one of our most popular and memorable events.  Everyone is welcome!

2016 Event
We send a heartfelt thanks to our WHPS members for all of their hard work to bring yet another memorable and moving program even though we experienced another year of soggy weather, moving the event indoors for the second year in a row. However we can never show enough gratitude to those fallen soldiers, and their families, for their ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Westlake sincerely thanks you for the freedoms we enjoy today!

Highlights at this year's event included:

  • Special program with music and special guest speaker Mr. Bill Brooks, a 40+ year veteran and author, radio personality, actor, and musician.
  • Free Hot Dogs and all the trimmings
  • Free Dutch oven cobbler prepared by local Boy Scout Troop 170
  • Homemade Ice Cream Contest

Each year, our younger guests are encouraged to attend and we always try to have a fun activity or two for them while learning about the significance of Decoration Day/Memorial Day.  And, guests of all ages are invited to participate every year by sending a note of gratitude to our military troops and learning/participating in the tradition of the Buddy Poppy, with proceeds benefiting our local VFW chapter in Roanoke.

We promise to bring you another year of complimentary admission, food, and parking too at our town's old-fashioned Memorial Day event!   We hope to see you next year on Monday, May 29, 2017!
