Lead and Copper Testing

General Posted on November 26, 2024 | Last Updated on November 22, 2024

Dear Westlake Residents,

We want to keep you informed about some recent water quality testing results within the Town of Westlake. As part of our ongoing commitment to your safety, we are conducting regular water quality testing, including tests for lead and copper levels. Recently, two samples from homes in Westlake showed elevated levels of lead, which is something we take very seriously.

Our goal is to ensure your water is safe and to stay ahead of any potential issues. In fact, the Town has been working closely with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of a special initiative to investigate and remove any potential lead sources from the water system, and based on those efforts, we’ve confirmed that there are no lead service lines in the Town.  After receiving the test results, the Town of Westlake field verified that neither the service line to the residential water meter or the service line from the meter to the residence contained lead.  This indicates that the source of the lead presence found in the testing is most likely from the plumbing inside the home.

For homes built after 1986, which include most homes in Westlake, it is highly unlikely that there is any lead plumbing, as federal laws were updated then to ensure that plumbing materials used in drinking water systems are lead-free. For older homes, while lead levels may sometimes show up in testing, it is often due to older plumbing fixtures or pipes inside the home, rather than the Town’s water supply.

We are fully committed to monitoring the situation and have planned additional testing in 2025 to ensure the water remains safe. If your home was one of those affected, we will be in touch with you directly to keep you updated.

Please know that your safety and well-being are our top priority, and we’re on top of this. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us. We are here to help.

If you’d like information on how to test water on your own, please contact the Town of Westlake Public Works at (817) 490-5732. Thank you for your understanding and for being a part of our community.
